Pioneer Woman of Dell Rapids Called by Death

Miss Evaline Wolff Irwin Dies Tuesday; Funeral Held This Morning at George Dean Home

On Tuesday evening, August 23, at 9 o'clock as the day was closing came the close of the life of the early pioneers of Minnehaha county and South Dakota, Evaline Wolff Irwin, the second of John N. and Mary Ann Irwin, death being due to nephritis. She was born July 17th, 1848, in Blair County, Pa., therefore being 79 years, 1 month 6 days old at her death. She was the second child in a family of seven children.

At an early age her father, who was a Northern sympathizer, was forced to flee with his family by boat from the wrath of the Confederate settlers. When she was 18 her mother died, leaving her to raise the family.

In 1886 she with her two brothers and sisters came to what was then Dakota Territory, locating in Dell Rapids.

For a number of years she was a dressmaker until the infirmities of age compelled her to lay it aside.

In her girlhood she united with the German Reform church at Clearspring, MD., transferring her membership to the First Presbyterian church of this city, which she maintained until her death. For 20 consecutive years she was secretary of the Presbyterian Sunday school, only relinquishing the office when her health would no longer permit her to attend, her heart being in the work of Christian instruction for the young.

She was a great reader and spent many of her spare hours in study and personal of the bible.

She is survived by two brothers, William C. and Jugurtha E. Irwin, and three sisters, Mrs. Anna M. Croply and Mrs. Susie N. Dean, all of this city, also Mrs. Lucy V. Whetstone of Mercersburg, PA. One sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Herr and one brother Andrew preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held this morning at 10:30 from the residence of her sister, Mrs. Geo. Dean, 507 Ninth St. E. where she has made her home for the past 38 years. Services were in charge of Rec. A.J. Holland, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.
