Alfred J. Kruse
September 5, 1924 - July 16, 2023
Alfred J. Kruse, age 98, passed away on July 16, 2023. He was born September 5, 1924, to John and Mildred Kruse in Lyon County, Iowa. He attended school in Rock Rapids, graduating from Rock Rapids High School in 1942.
The memorial service will be Friday, July 21, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Miller Funeral Home Southside Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Ave. Interment will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Our Savior's Lutheran Church Foundation, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 628, or a charity of your choice.
He joined the Marine Corps in 1943 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California before being shipped overseas into active war. He was stationed in Guam and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. He received an honorable discharge in December 1945 and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service.
He married Dorothy Sandstede on December 14, 1946. They lived in Sioux Falls, SD where Alfred worked for A.Y McDonalds in sales until 1953. He then went on to drive transport for Mobil Oil, where he worked for over 30 years, achieving many safe driving awards.
Alfred and Dorothy retired in 1984 & 1985. They bought a Holiday Rambler trailer and started traveling.
They joined the Rambling Pheasants RV club, going to many places for campouts and rallies. They traveled to almost all of the 50 states, their favorite state was Hawaii. They spent many years going south in the winter, their favorite spot was Green Valley, Arizona. They also did several bus tours.
Grateful to have shared his life are his wife of 76 years, Dorothy Kruse; children, Sandra Dykstra, of Loveland, CO, Susan (Steve) Hauff, of Sioux Falls, SD, Lavonne Dunham, of Sioux Falls, SD, and Duane (Denise) Kruse, of Sioux Falls, SD; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Loretta Quinn; brother, Loren Kruse; two sons-in-law, Richard Dykstra, and Roger Hainje.
