April 7, 1941 - June 3, 2024
Marianne Bigner, 83, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Lunch will follow the service at the funeral home. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 10, 2024, also at the funeral home.
Marianne Bigner was born April 7, 1941 in Mitchell, NE. She grew up on a dairy farm and her family was active in the Assembly of God church.
She attended nursing school in Mitchell while working at the local hospital and on the family farm. She met and married her husband, Joseph (Joe) Bigner during nursing school, on August 11, 1963. When she completed college, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD and have been here their entire marriage. They were just two months from their 61st anniversary.
In 1968, Marianne went back to school to become a nurse anesthetist, and graduated with her MS in nursing in 1970. After that, she worked as a solo practitioner in small towns around Sioux Falls until her retirement just before the turn of the century.
With her encouragement, Joe started a business called Great Plains Chemical Company. Marianne always joked that she was the “chief cook and bottle washer" for the business, which really meant she was the secretary and treasurer. She took over the office full time upon her retirement from anesthesia, and was out there nearly every day with Joe until they sold the business.
Marianne loved to travel. She and Joe made a point to travel the world as much as they could. While her health was good, they took a major world cruise every year.
Marianne is survived by her husband Joe; her children David Bigner, and Dori Bigner (Craig Whitmore); her grandchildren Nicholas Bigner, Jessica Bigner, and Joshua Whitmore; sister Elaine Lebruska; her nephews Jerry (Christine) Lebruska, Kelly (Stephanie) Lebruska, Kevin Schnell, and Rodney Schnell; and nieces Konni Einfalt and Lori Lebruska.
Marianne was preceded in death by her parents Elizabeth and Fred, her brother Jack, and her in-laws Wilma and Henry Bigner.
