Gene Buffington
February 22, 1937 - February 19, 2024
With great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Gene, who left this world on February 19, 2024. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Gene Merle Buffington was born on February 22, 1937, in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Clarence and Martha (Dolly) Buffington. The youngest of 13. Gene was a star athlete in his early life and carried this passion throughout his life. After graduating from Aberdeen Central High School, he joined the United States Air Force and bravely served in Korea. His dedication and commitment were unwavering. A true testament to his character.
Shortly after his return to Aberdeen, he met the love of his life, Dixie Kjosa, and they were married on August 12, 1961. They built a beautiful life together. They raised 2 children, Brad and Brent, and 6 grandchildren who were their pride and joy. Gene and Dixie were examples of what genuine love and caring look like.
Gene was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. His integrity and honesty were unwavering, and he always kept his promises. He loved to tell a good joke, but his laughter was always the best part.
A hardworking and dedicated man, Gene was a pillar of strength for his family and a true role model for all who knew him. He was always there to lend a helping hand or offer words of wisdom, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Gene left behind his two sons Brad (Jennifer), and Brent (Shiloh), grandchildren, Nick, Josie, Eli, Brock, Katy, and Spencer, and one great-grandchild, Olivia. Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Dixie, his parents, and siblings.
Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we take comfort in knowing that Gene is now reunited with his beloved wife in eternal peace. May his legacy of love, laughter, and integrity live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Rest in peace, Gene. You will always be remembered as a great man.
Visitation will be on February 27, 2024, at 10:00 am at East Side Lutheran Church, 1300 E. 10th Street, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 57103. The Funeral will be at 11:00 am with a luncheon to follow. The family will be present one hour before the service for visitation. The burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have offered their condolences and support during this difficult time. Your love and kindness have provided comfort to our grieving hearts. May Gene’s soul find eternal peace, and his memory be a blessing to us all.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-4
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to harvest, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance...
