Ellen E. Carlson
February 8, 1940 - October 20, 2023
Ellen E. Carlson, age 83, died Friday, October 20, 2023 at the Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 27, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 26 at the George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery following the service.
Ellen E. Jacobs was born in West Columbia, South Carolina on February 8, 1940 to Etson and Elizabeth Jacobs. In 1959, she met and married Roger Carlson, who was stationed at nearby Shaw Air Force Base at Sumter, South Carolina. In 1960, the couple was transferred to Texas and made their home in Wichita Falls, Texas until Roger was discharged from the Air Force in 1963. They returned to South Carolina and lived in Columbia, South Carolina until 1964, when they moved to Cottonwood, Minnesota. They made their home in Cottonwood for the next 36 years. In January of 2000, the couple retired and moved to Sioux Falls.
Ellen was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Sioux Falls. While in Cottonwood, she served as Den Mother for Cottonwood Cub Scouts, involved in the local “TOPS” club, as well as active in events involving crafts of any kind. Some referred to her as the “Doll Lady” because of the many dolls she made and collected.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Roger Carlson; her daughter, Carrie of Sioux Falls; sons, Roger Jr. of Truman, MN, John and his wife, Susan of Sioux Falls; brother, Larry and his wife, Patricia of Kennesaw, GA; sisters, Patricia and her husband, Harold of West Columbia, SC, Shirley and her husband, Richard of West Columbia, SC, Sandra of Portland, IN, Brenda of Columbia, SC, Cathy and her husband, Jim of Lexington, SC; granddaughters, Ashley, Caitlyn, MiKayla “Kia”, Racheal, Mikayla “Kayla”; grandsons, Darin, Jonah, Jordan; great-granddaughters, Sophia, Brianna and Ellie; great-grandson, Noah; and many nieces and nephews.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Etson and Elizabeth Jacobs; brother, Jimmy Jacobs and his wife, Linda; and daughter-in-law, Lisa Carlson.
