Darlene Jane (Hoefert) Buckey
November 3, 1930 - September 17, 2022

Saturday, September 17th, 2022, Darlene passed away peacefully in her home, at the age of 91, following a pothole ladened, hair pinned curved road trip with Lewy Body Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Darlene was born November 3rd, 1930, to Clarence and SeVera (Stolley) Hoefert in Hartford, SD. The family would later move to Sioux Falls, SD where Darlene would become the eldest of seven children.

Darlene was united in marriage to Alvin Edmunds on May 24th, 1947. Soon after they married, they created a family consisting of 5 children and resided in Hartford, SD. Surrounded by family and friends in her community Darlene was able to withstand becoming a widow in 1964. Darlene worked hard to support her five children. She created chocolate candied confections for Fenn Candy and Ice Cream Company. She hand-tied fly-fishing lures for a small shop in town. Working for Raven Industries she and her sister helped to create parachutes for weather balloons and military use. She worked in the office for Minnehaha County Library systems of SD, and Hartford Wood Products refinishing furniture.

On February 17th, 1967, Darlene was united in marriage to Delmar Buckey, in Sioux Falls SD. They remained married for 30 years, having one daughter of their own, moving to Faribault, MN and continuing to raise their blended family. Darlene was able to be a stay-at-home wife and mother until Delmar became disabled in 1978, after heart surgery. Darlene was never afraid of hard work, and she returned to the workplace to help support the family. She worked as a prep cook at Sirloin Stockade, later Golden Corral. Several years later she would work for the State Hospital Dietary system. She loved cooking and baking. She admired her grandfather who ironically was widowed at an early age, and worked all day in the fields farming, only to bake bread to sell at night, while raising his five children. She baked the best banana bread, and always had some on hand if you stopped by for a visit. There were always cookies in the cookie jar, or bars in the refrigerator. After retiring from the State Hospital system, she was often taking on babysitting and house cleaning jobs for neighbors or local families. Delmar passed away in 1996, and Darlene decided to stop driving to peoples’ houses to work and enjoyed a new hobby, ceramics. She was a talented painter and created several treasures, including a Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus for Christmas that were admired in her assisted living. Darlene was so well loved at her assisted living and enjoyed arts and crafts, as well as bingo, music, and movies. She loved to tell stories to anyone who would listen.

Darlene is survived by her six children, Vannda (Wayne) Olson, Sioux Falls SD, Janice Timmermann, Sioux Falls SD, Alvin (Donna) Edmunds, Louisville NE, Burten Edmunds, Faribault MN, Pamela (Rick) Hiltunen, Howard SD, and Kathleen (Bob) Tousignant of Rosemount MN. Darlene is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, Thomas Fitzgerald, Peggy Plagman and Ryan Andresen, all of Sioux Falls SD. Erik (Dawn) Edmunds, Proctor MN, Elissa (Rob) Gautier, Owatonna MN, Stephen (Dawn) Edmunds, Montamedi MN, Tyler Edmunds, Broomfield CO, Adam Edmunds, Owatonna MN, Senia (Zach) Borg, Sioux Falls, SD, Katy Hiltunen, Howard SD, Kasey (Grant) Tousignant, Shakopee MN, Robyn (Luke)Kegley, Savage MN, Noah Tousignant, and David Tousignant of Rosemount MN. Fourteen great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Darlene is also survived by her siblings Betty Ann (Arlin) Twedt, Sioux Falls, SD, Clarence (Marlys) Hoefert, Shelton WA, and Al (Linda) Hoefert, Sioux Falls SD. Many nieces and nephews as well.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, her sister, Arlene Lofswold, brothers, Luther Hoefert and Rick Hoefert, her son in laws, Dennis Timmermann, and John Andresen, and two granddaughters, Tanya Andresen and Renee Edmunds. Also, many other beloved family and friends.

Darlene was most proud of her family and made her wishes clear that all are invited to join in a gathering at Woodlawn Cemetery Sioux Falls SD on November 5th, 2022, at 11am for a short interment service and prayers.
