Dennis R. Martinec
April 28, 1942 - August 12, 2022
Dennis Raymond Martinec was born on April 28, 1942, in Mitchell, South Dakota to Edward and Mayme (Vesely) Martinec. With his parents and older sister Mary Anne, Dennis lived in California for most of his young adulthood before moving back to South Dakota. He had a successful 37 year career in the telecommunication industry, before enjoying a 22-year retirement.
Dennis raised four children with then-wife Sharon Gorman: Steven (Denise) Martinec of Sioux Falls, Jill (Mike) Richardson of Pierre, Tom (Lori) Martinec of Pierre, and Carrie (Steve) Thompson of Sioux Falls.
Dennis married his current wife, Joyce Ollerich, on August 22, 1992. Through this marriage, Dennis gained three stepchildren whom he treated as his own: Kevin (Bernadette) Oppold of Cottage Grove, MN, Keith (Karie) Oppold of Tea, and Linda (Wade) Lillie of Casper, WY.
Together, Dennis and Joyce lived in Sioux Falls and enjoyed their life together as grandparents to Kylie (Ramsey) Sheard, Katie (Matt) Zirbel, Hunter Thompson, Benjamin Martinec, Jennifer Oppold, Kathryn Oppold, Abigail (Lane) Moser, Margaret Oppold, Jon (Katy) Oppold, Ashley (Emmit) Baker, Travis Lillie, and Courtney Lillie. They are great-grandparents to Carter Zirbel, Isaac Oppold, Lincoln and Rowan Moser, Sage, Horacio, Immaneul, and Misun Oppold, and Jade Olivia Baker.
Dennis’s interests included working with computers. In fact, he built his very own computer before home computers were widely available. He also enjoyed birding, hunting, but his true passion was being with his whole family.
Dennis is survived by his wife Joyce, sister Mary Anne Lawrie, children, stepchildren, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, sister-in-law Rose Stumpe, and special friends Fran and Marilyn Synsvoll. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mayme Martinec, and great-grandson Wes Sheard,
A Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 19, 2022 at St. Lamberts Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 18, 2022, with a Catholic Wake Service at 6:30 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.
