JoAnn Berndt
August 14, 1958 - July 29, 2022
JoAnn (Debates) Berndt, 63 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Friday, July 29, at Avera Mckennan Hospital.
JoAnn was born August 14, 1958 in Pipestone, MN to Gerald DeBates and Mary Lou (Edwards-Hertling) Debates.
JoAnn eventually moved to Sioux Falls and attended Washington High School, where she graduated. After graduation, JoAnn worked at Swenson Plumbing and Heating for 15 years. In 1992, she started her in home daycare, where she took care of countless amounts of kids throughout the years. JoAnn babysat until her untimely death (JoAnn changed millions of diapers and wiped plenty of butts and noses). She loved each child that walked or crawled through her door, and they loved her.
JoAnn was united in marriage to Roger Berndt on May 29th, 1982. They had 2 children. Josh and Dawn. They made their home in Sioux Falls and were married for 40 years.
JoAnn was so proud of her children and grandchildren. They were so blessed to have JoAnn a part of their daily lives. JoAnn loved to bake with Brynn, laugh at Brexten’s jokes, and watch Bennett show off his newly learned wrestling moves. She cherished her snuggles with Avery. JoAnn loved her grandchildren deeply and would do anything for them.
JoAnn was very dedicated to her music. In her free time, she sang for over 30 years at St. Josephs and St. Lamberts. Her quick wit could always fill a room with laughter. Gathering with friends and family was something that JoAnn loved the most.
Grateful for having shared her life is her husband Roger, son Josh Berndt (Britney) Sioux Falls, daughter Dawn (Doug) Cordell, Sioux Falls, four grandchildren; Brynn, Brexten, Bennett and Avery, siblings; Dana Olson, Sebring Florida , Vicki (Donovan) Kost, Sioux Falls, Lynn (David) Washburn, Princeton KY, David (Bo) DeBates, Seoul South Korea, Sister-in-law Diana Hertling, Hartford, and many nieces and nephews.
JoAnn is preceded in death by her parents; Gerald and Mary Lou DeBates, brother Leonard Hertling, brother-in-law Leonard Berndt, her mother-in-law Edna Berndt, and father-in-law, Leslie Berndt.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 1:30pm Thursday, August 4, 2022 at St. Lambert Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at Heritage Funeral Home with a wake service and rosary at 7:00pm.
