Sioux Falls, SD ~ Gary Max Murfield, age 80, passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at Ava’s House by Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services celebrating his life will be 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls, SD with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. His family will be present to greet friends for visitation on Monday at the funeral home from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please consider making a memorial donation to The St. Francis House or to Sloan Murfield (a two-year-old with Batten Disease).

Gary Max Murfield was born on March 13, 1943 in Brookings, SD to Rodney and Marjorie (Quissel) Murfield. He was raised on a farm in Afton Township, in Brookings County. Gary received his education at Afton Dist. #13 in Brookings County and Graduated from Brookings High School. He continued his education earning his degree from North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota. Gary honorably served in the Army National Guard from 1964 to 1970. Gary was a member of the Elks Club and served as a supervisor of Mapleton Township. He was also a member and served as past president of the Sertoma Club.

Gary was united in marriage with Cheryl Lowell on October 9, 1965 in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls and were blessed with the birth of a daughter, Lori and a son, Michael.

Gary spent his working career in sales. Working for Gourley Distributing from 1965 to 1975, Raven Industries, Larson Hardware, Minnesota Toro, North Central Distributing, Northern Star Distributing, and Wild Cat Manufacturing before owning and operating the Wharf on Big Stone Lake. Gary and Cheryl spent over 40 summers on Big Stone Lake. In his retirement, Gary enjoyed volunteering at the Banquet in Sioux Falls, supporting his son in the Special Olympics and supporting the annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner.

In Gary’s free time he loved hunting for deer and elk with his dad and fishing. He also enjoyed playing his daily card game with his friends. Above all, Gary loved his family; especially traveling to Alabama to visit his grandchildren. Gary was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Cheryl Murfield of Sioux Falls, SD; two children, Lori (Christopher) Bloom of Huntsville, AL and Michael (special friend, Mary Jane Weber) Murfield of Sioux Falls, SD; three grandchildren, Hannah, Claudia and Wyatt Bloom; two sisters-in-law, Susan Lowell of Sioux Falls, SD and Myra (Larry) Feay of Sioux Falls, SD; many other relatives and friends.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Rodney and Marjorie Murfield; and step-mother, Edith Murfield; and his brother-in-law, Russell Lowell.
