Dr. Frederick Radcliffe Entwistle
August 4, 1931 - October 3, 2022

Frederick ("Fred") Radcliffe Entwistle, M.D. of Sioux Falls passed away at Sanford Hospice on October 3, 2022. His memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Sioux Falls.

Fred was born on August 4, 1931, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to Oliver and Emily Entwistle. He was raised in Westfield, New Jersey, and graduated from Westfield High School in 1949.

Fred attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and graduated in 1953. He attended the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1957. Ironically, though he was an extremely diligent student, one of Fred's most memorable days of medical school occurred on October 4, 1955, when he skipped class to listen to his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in Game 7 to win their one and only World Series title. He never quite forgave the Dodgers for moving west two years later.

After an internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, Fred completed a year of surgical residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, spending one year as the ship's surgeon on an aircraft carrier, the USS Hancock, in the Western Pacific, and a second year at Naval Air Station Alameda in Alameda, California. Fred returned to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and completed an orthopedic residency in 1964. Following his residency he practiced orthopedic surgery for two years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and for 15 years in Sioux Falls, the last several years with the Central Plains Clinic.

In 1981, Fred began a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of California in Irvine. Upon the completion of his residency, he became one of only a handful of physicians to be board certified in both orthopedic surgery and physical medicine and rehabilitation. He then served as medical director of rehabilitation at the St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, California.

Fred and his wife returned to Sioux Falls in 1989, when he was invited to lead the new rehabilitation unit at Sioux Valley Hospital (now Sanford USD Medical Center). Fred practiced medicine full-time until he was 68 years old and worked part-time and as a volunteer in various medical capacities (the last at the VA Medical Center) until he was 81.

On January 11, 1958, Fred was united in marriage with Ann Duback Montgomery of Milwaukee. They were blessed with three children, Frederick (Rick), Kathleen (Kathy), and Paul. The family enjoyed many fun and educational trips. In his later years Fred enjoyed reading, going to movies, and attending his grandchildren’s activities. The whole family was well-versed in his favorite saying: "Disease knows no holiday." His sense of humor was on full display until the day he died.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Ann; sons Rick (Marcia) of Sioux Falls, and Paul (Beth) of San Diego, California; daughter Kathy of Brookings, South Dakota; and four grandchildren: Bradley, Tommy, Emily, and Josie. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Herb.

Memorials may be directed to Feeding South Dakota, 4701 N. Westport Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57107.
