Mary Jane Brown
August 9, 1937 - May 2, 2020
Mary Jane Brown, age 82 of Sioux Falls, SD passed from this life on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls, SD. A private family service will be held on Friday, May 8, 2020 with a Memorial Service to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that individuals consider donating to Center House, a transitional facility for women released from the South Dakota Women’s Prison in Pierre, SD. The Center House mailing address is PO Box 114, Pierre, SD 57501.
Mary was born August 9, 1937 to Ray and Luceal Bean in Medora, Indiana. Mary was their first child and was five years old when her mother died. When Mary was nine years old, Ray married Charlotte Magnolia Dillman. Ray eventually purchased a small farm from the Dillman family where Mary was raised.
Mary lived a life of service and she began her service early as a Sunday School teacher at the age of nine. She traveled with the Rural Bible Crusade teaching youth camps and Vacation Bible School. In 1956, she left home to attend Apostolic Bible Institute (ABI) in St. Paul, MN. When co-workers at the local Kresge store found out she was leaving with almost nothing, they got together and bought her towels and linens to help. She remembered that kindness for the rest of her life. While attending the Bible school, Mary was active in Hobby Club and Choir. On June 11, 1960, she married fellow ABI graduate Ernest Brown in the pastor’s home in French Lick, Indiana. Mary was a devoted wife and mother as well as working full time outside the home. She held several positions, the last being at Adams Thermal Systems, of Canton, South Dakota.
The family lived in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio before settling in Sioux Falls, SD. Over the years, Mary served as Ladies Auxiliary director, singer, Sunday school teacher and willing laborer. Along the way, Mary and Ernest took special care to serve the needs of the older saints.
Grateful for sharing her life are her husband, Ernest Brown of Sioux Falls, SD; their children, Rev. Roderick Brown (Melonye) of Mitchell, SD; Kimberly Brown of Sioux Falls, SD, Jefferson Brown (Faith) of Tomah, WI, Courtney Brown (Kathleen) of Rogers, MN, Glenna Krebs of Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Magnolia Tolbert of Franklin, IN. Mary also enjoyed the company of her 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Luceal (Bowman) Bean; stepmother, Charlotte Magnolia Bean; brother, Don Bean.
