Ann G. Schmidt was born to Wallace and Leonore (Pier) Gitchell on Feb. 24, 1926, in Sioux Falls. She attended school in Sioux Falls and graduated from Brookings High School. Ann Attended South Dakota State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in home economics in 1943. She taught school in Bryant and then in Dell Rapids Public School system until she married Harold Schmidt on Sept. 18, 1948, in Brookings. They continued to live in Dell Rapids until moving to Flandreau in 1960, where they owned the International Harvester Implement Dealership. Ann was a member of the Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Altar Society and PEO. She was an avid golfer with tree hole-in-ones and was a club champion for six years. Ann died on Wednesday, Feb 27, 2002, at the Flandreau Municipal Hospital, Flandreau. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, on Dec. 23, 1997; her parents and her stepfather, Charles Gaukel. Grateful for having shared her life are her two sons: Tom, and his wife Rita, Flandreau; and Mike, and his wife, Jan, Sioux Falls; her three daughters: Patricia, and her husband, Tom West, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; Jane, and her husband, David Mydland, Sioux Falls; and Joan, and her husband, Craig Severtson, Flandreau; her nine grandchildren: Jacque, and her husband, Brent; Kim; Ashley; Nicole; Beau; Bret; Troy; Courtney; Megan; two great-granddaughters, Paige and Hope; and one step sister, Maxine, and her husband, Doug Keith, Alexandria, La. Funeral Service were held on Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Flandreau, with Father Richard Fox officiating. Interment was held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Dell Rapids.
