Ann M. Schmidt, 87, of Dell Rapids passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the Dells Area Health Center in Dell Rapids following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. with a Catholic Daughters Rosary at 3:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. Visitation will resume at 6:00 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with a Christian Wake Service beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Ann was born on November 9, 1925 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the daughter of Maurice and Grace (Geelan) Knewel. She attended Cathedral grade school and high school and graduated in 1943. After graduation, Ann worked at Northern States Power Company in Sioux Falls, SD. She married James H. Schmidt on May 28, 1949 at St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids where they raised their family of 12 children. Ann worked in the office of the family chemical business in Dell Rapids. Jim died on July 18, 2010.
Ann was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the St. Joseph Altar Society, the PEO Chapter AD, Dell Rapids, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Dell Rapids Golf Course.
Grateful for having shared Ann's life are her eight daughters, Nancy Schmidt of Dell Rapids, Janet (Randy) Pownell of Spokane, WA, Linda (Dennis) Daugaard of Pierre, Jean Holle of Garretson, Mary Schmidt of Sioux Falls, Margaret Amundson of Sioux Falls, Carol (Dave) Jacobson of Dakota Dunes and Barb (Darwin) Larson of Fargo, ND; her four sons, Pete Schmidt of Dell Rapids, Gary (Brittany) Schmidt of Renner, Dan (Cindi) Schmidt of Dell Rapids and Pat (Angie) Schmidt of Dell Rapids; her 24 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and many wonderful friends and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her loving sister, Jane Corkery, her two brothers, Jack and Bob Knewel, an infant grandson, Andrew Schmidt and a son-in-law, Dave Holle.
