William “Bill” David Smith, age 83, died on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation with his family present to greet friends will be from 5 to 7 pm with a wake service at 7 pm on Friday, August 9, 2019 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at The Church of St. Mary with burial at St. Michael Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD.

William David Smith was born on April 8, 1936 in rural Moody County South Dakota to David and Alide (Carsrud) Smith. Bill was raised on a farm near Colman, SD. Bill received his education in Rutland, SD, graduating from Rutland High School. Bill made his home in Sioux Falls, SD in 1959.

While Bill was attending a dance in Dell Rapids, SD he met Sharon Burkey. Bill and Sharon were united in marriage on November 20, 1961 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls, SD. Bill and Sharon were blessed with seven children. Bill worked for 36 ½ years at Monroe Business Systems where he repaired office equipment. In 1996 at the age of 60, Bill began work as a custodian for the Sioux Falls School District retiring in 2001. Bill and Sharon then spent six years working as campground hosts at numerous campgrounds around the United States.

Bill enjoyed camping, dancing, playing card games, and riding his bike. He also enjoyed “crunching numbers”. Above all, Bill loved spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Sharon Burkey Smith of Sioux Falls, SD; six children: Curt (Ann) Smith of Shoreview, MN, Tom (Jackie) Smith of Ft. Pierre, SD, Michelle (Lee) Hughes of Lakeville, MN, Bob (Julie) Smith of Sioux Falls, SD, Danielle (Fabien) Ponson of Edina, MN and Ryan (Dawn) Smith of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter-in-law, Ofelia Smith of Kenosha, WI; 23 grandchildren: Audrey & Marcus Smith, Christopher & Giancarlo Smith, Mat, Rachel & Ellie Smith, Mick & Jack Sorenson, Alex Hughes, Josh (Brandie) Smith, Alyssa, Katie & Sara Smith, Anna & Benjamin Ponson, Kurtis, Miguel, Dawson, Abby, Caylor, Josie & Hadley Smith; three great-grandchildren: Kaien, Liam & Sophia Smith; three sisters: Darlene Phelps of Colman, SD Wilma Shaffer of Chamberlain, SD and Betty DeBoer of Brandon, SD; one brother, Jim Smith of Colman, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, David and Alide Smith; one son, Steve Smith who passed away in 2011; and three brothers-in-laws; Dale Phelps, Dwayne Shaffer and Dale DeBoer.
