Marilyn "Mim" Helen Hazard
May 26, 1931 - April 27, 2016

Mim Hazard died April 27, 2016 at Dougherty Hospice House.

Born Marilyn Helen Weller on May 26, 1931 to Helen and Al Weller in Mitchell, SD, Mim attended grade school in Mitchell, graduating as valedictorian from Mitchell High. She went on to earn a BS degree in education at the University of Colorado, Boulder where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and Phi Beta Kappa, graduating Magna Cum Laude.

Mim worked summers at the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park where she met Bob Hazard. They married on August 27, 1953. She began her teaching career in Longmont, CO then moved with Bob to El Paso, TX where he served in the Army. The two returned to South Dakota in 1956 when Bob accepted a position as an architect in Sioux Falls.

Mim raised three children: Jeff, Pam and Rob for whom she provided an amazing example of humanity. Her family was everything to her but she also enjoyed her involvement with PEO, the Thetas and the YWCA. Favorite pastimes included visiting with friends, tennis, reading (a book a day), crossword puzzles and trying out new recipes on her family.

The family revels in memories of idyllic summers spent at family cabins in the Black Hills.

Mim was preceded in death by her husband Bob and brother-in-law Ross Korsgaard. She is survived by two siblings: Pam Korsgaard of Roseville, MN and Bill Weller (Sue) of Murphys, CA; three children: Jeff Hazard (Sheila) of Sioux Falls; Pam Calderwood (Bill) of Broomfield, CO and Rob Hazard (Jill) of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren: Erin (Ryan) Polen, Blake and Katie Calderwood and Nolan, Ashlyn and Caryn Hazard… and her favorite great-grandchild: Grace Marilyn Polen.

Her children will host a gathering of family and friends to celebrate Mim’s life on Thursday, May 26, the 85th anniversary of her birth. A private interment will be held earlier at Woodlawn cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mim and Bob Hazard Memorial Fund at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.
