Bernard "Barney" Reiter was born on 23 February 1918 in Lincoln County South Dakota, the son of Benedict and Lauretta Reiter. He grew up and attended school in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He married Grace Smith on 25 October 1937 in Canton, South Dakota. Barney entered the US Navy in 1943 and served during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to live in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. He worked at the Riverside Hatchery and later for Land O Lakes Dairy. In 1970, the family moved to Sioux Falls. In 1978, Barney went to work for the South Dakota Highway Patrol weigh stations. In 1981, he retired. Barney and Grace spent their retired winters in Texas.

He was a memeber of the Dell Rapids American Legion Post and the Sioux Falls VFW.

Barney died 5 April 2000 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Grace; his son Ken and wife Kathy; grandsons Aaron and Jared and Jared's wife Christina and great granddaughter Brianna; three brothers Richard, William, and Leonard; four sisters, Mary, Lauretta, Lucille and Donna.
