Joyce Coatsworth
August 17, 1938 - May 18, 2019
Joyce Coatsworth, 80, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away on Saturday, May 18, at Avera McKennan Hospital surrounded by her family.
Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 – 7:00 pm with a wake service beginning at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, May 21, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave.
Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am Wednesday, May 22, at St. Michael Parish, 1600 S. Marion Road. There will be burial at St. Michael Cemetery.
Joyce Joanne Kunkel, daughter of Leo and Lucille (Samp) Kunkel, was born August 17, 1938 at the family farm near Epiphany, SD. She grew up there receiving her elementary education at the Church of the Epiphany Catholic School in Epiphany and graduating from Farmer High School, Farmer, SD in 1956.
She enjoyed being a homemaker until her children entered school. She began working as the lunch lady and teacher's assistant at Lincoln Elementary where she was affectionately known as Mrs. C to the students. She worked there until the school closed in 1994. She then worked at Hayward School until her retirement.
Joyce was a devout Catholic with a very strong faith. She was a member of St Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls for many years, and most-recently a member of St Michael Parish in Sioux Falls.
Joyce and Duane enjoyed traveling in their retirement. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge with her friends. Joyce and Duane also loved watching ballgames, especially great nieces and nephews in softball and basketball.
Joyce passed away just 11 days shy of her 60th wedding anniversary. She married Duane Coatsworth on May 29th 1959 at the Church of the Epiphany Catholic Church in Epiphany SD. To this union were born twin daughters, Sherry and Shelly and a son, Troy.
She was preceded in death by her parents Leo and Lucille Kunkel, a sister, Carol Lee Tuschen, in laws, Florence and Harold Kellogg, sister in law, Lavon Ginter and her husband, Ron.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Duane; their children, Sherry (Mike) Andrews, Shelly Becker (Jerry Ramm) and Troy (Heidi) Coatsworth, all of Sioux Falls SD; a sister, Lisa (Ron) Roskens, Emery SD; a brother-in-law, Kenny (Jan) Tuschen, Farmer SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
