Ann Julie Whitcomb was born in Sioux Falls, March 27, 1940, to Donald and Theresa (Madden) Whitcomb. She graduated in 1958 from St. Joseph Cathedral High School. She received her nursing cap in 1959 from Presentation College, Aberdeen, SD, and her RN degree from Mount Marty College, Yankton, SD, in 1962. Ann married Henry Jons of Sioux City, IA, in 1961, and raised four children.

Ann was House Supervisor and ER Assistant Supervisor at St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City. In the early 1980s, she initiated an Addictions Program at St. Luke’s Hospital and wrote the operating manuals for Detox for Alcohol and Other Drug Addictions, for Eating Disorders, and for Sexual Addictions. She helped write grants to obtain funding for what became a highly successful program.

In 1993, Ann was hired by Sioux Valley Hospital and Health System (now Sanford) in Sioux Falls to lead and manage the addictions program at that facility. She was also a counselor with Keystone’s Employee Assistance Program, traveling weekly to Dakota Hospital in Chamberlain, SD, and to Winner Regional Hospital in Winner, SD, in her role as EAP counselor.

Ann retired in 2005 and in 2006 moved to Tampa, FL, where she was subsequently diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy, a rare neurodegenerative disease. She faced her prognosis with courage and died peacefully.

Preceding her in death was her father, Donald Kellar Whitcomb of Sioux Falls and her son-in-law, Jay LaPlante of Sioux City, Iowa.

She is survived by her mother, Theresa Whitcomb, Nixa, MO; three daughters: Jeanne Jons (Richard) Bisaccia of Tampa, FL. Julie Jons LaPlante of Sioux City, IA.
