Maria Onisoru
October 26, 1944 - March 20, 2021

Maria Any Onisoru, the most beautiful and precious wife, mother and grandmother passed away March 20, 2021, seconds after midnight, peacefully and surrounded by her family. Maria Any Brosteanu was born October 26, 1944, to Neculai and Elena Brosteanu in Lalesti, Romania. She liked to describe herself as mischevious as a child, trying to keep up with her sisters, and climbing trees to quietly hide from her mom when she came looking for her. Maria became hearing impaired when she was 5 years old due to Mumps disease.

In 1964 she caught the stares of Aurel Onisoru from across the schoolyard. She asked him why he was staring, and he replied he was mesmerized by her beauty. Shortly after they started dating, which the courtship was to last almost 4 years, he promised her 2 things: one is that he will marry her and love her until death and the second is that he will bring her to America, the land where dreams come true. Although she didn't believe him right away, he made both of those promises come true, forever changing their lives and the lives of their children. They married October 5th, 1967. They made their home in Birlad, Romania and were blessed with two children, Marius Andy in 1970, and Lorana Ingrid in 1973. They moved to Piatra Neamt, Romania in 1975. In 1986, after accomplishing the most sought after dream by any Romanian, her husband fulfilled his second promise to her when he moved his family to Sioux Falls SD.

Although her dream was to be a dentist, due to her inability to hear she became a seamstress. Maria was a skilled seamstress and worked for several different companies throughout her lifetime. She loved flowers, gardening, doing puzzle books and jigsaw puzzles. She liked her scratch lottery tickets. She had a special bond with the family dog, Duke, which carried to her final moments with him snuggled on her lap. Above all she loved her family and was the most loving wife, mother and grandmother and lovingly impressed everyone she met with her special, infectious smile and laughter.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two sisters. She is survived by her husband of 54 years Aurel, son Marius (Gabriela) Onisoru, daughter Lorana (Richard) Hanson, grandsons Alexandru Nichifor, Austin Nichifor, Julien Onisoru, granddaughter Isabella Onisoru, and three step grandsons Tucker Hanson, Taylor Hanson, Nicholas Hanson. She is also survived by numerous, dear lifetime friends.

Services will be held at Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church,1936 S Summit Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57105, on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Family will be present at 10:00 a.m. for a time of visitation and to greet friends.
