Richard J. Kaffar
September 06, 1932 - June 14, 2020
Richard J. Kaffar, 87, of Sioux Falls, SD died Sunday, June 14, 2020 at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. His Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Thursday, June 18 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Sioux Falls, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. The church requests that all attendees wear masks. Open visitation will be from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, June 17 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls.
Richard Joseph Kaffar, son of John and Amelia (Kluin) Kaffar, was born September 6, 1932 in Worthing, SD. He grew up around Worthing and graduated from Worthing High School in 1950.
Richard entered the U.S. Air Force on March 1, 1951 in Sioux Falls, SD. He was honorably discharged on November 30, 1952 at Fort Snelling, MN. Richard worked at John Morrell and Company for 34 years before retiring in 1987.
Richard was a teenager when he met Joyce Deurloo in Canton, SD. They were united in marriage on April 24, 1955. Richard and Joyce shared a deep love and very special bond. They were inseparable; if you saw one of them, the other was always close behind. One of Richard’s greatest pleasures was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Richard was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed frequent trips with his camping trailer and boat. Fishing for walleye on the Missouri River, deer and pheasant hunting in the Dakotas, and trap shooting at Crooks Gun Club were among his favorite activities. Also, he took pride in completing home and car repairs at the cherished home of 56 years on 38th Street in Sioux Falls.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Joyce ; three children, Lucinda Remme and her husband, Lauren, Sioux Falls, SD, Tim Kaffar and his wife, Barb, Zap, ND, Bradley Kaffar, St. Cloud, MN; five grandsons, Kris Kaffar, Travis Remme and his wife, Jessica, Mark Kaffar, Daniel Kaffar and his wife, Hayley, Joel Remme; six great-grandchildren, Gianna Kaffar, Miriam Kaffar, Benedict Kaffar, Magdalene Kaffar, Braxton Remme, Gavin Remme; two sisters, Frances Ness and Lucille Lyons; and many other relatives and friends.
Richard was preceded in death by a beloved son, Joel; a great-granddaughter, Oaklyn Remme; his parents, John and Amelia Kaffar; a brother, John Kaffar; and two sisters, Gertrude Olson and Agnes Duvalis.
