October 21, 1941 - December 30, 2020

Retired US Navy Senior Chief Gary Marvin Stewart, of Sioux Falls, passed away on December 30th, 2020, at the a ge of 79, with his family at his side.

Gary was born in South Sioux City, NE, on October 21st, 1941, to Caryl and Auley Stewart. In 1959, he graduated from South Sioux Senior High School and joined the US Navy. During his service, he was stationed in San Diego, CA, Guam, Omaha, NE, and Sioux Falls, SD. He proudly served for 27 years, retiring in 1992. After his retirement, he worked for Sioux Valley Hospital until leaving in 2007 to spend more time with his family.

He married Rita Frederes on July 2nd, 1966. They spent their first years in Sioux City, IA raising their three children and eventually moving to Sioux Falls. After 46 years of marriage, Rita passed away in 2012. Gary was grateful to find love again. He married Bonita Kempel on September 10th, 2016, and they enjoyed his final years together traveling and spending time with family.

Over the years, Gary spent countless weekends camping and fishing with family and friends. He had a passion for traveling, listening to music, reading, and attending his grandchildren’s activities. He was also an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His family was his pride and joy. He had deep faith in the Lord, our Savior. Words can not express how very much he will be missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Bonita; three children - Kim (Steve) Messerschmidt, Kelly (Todd) Peterson, and Gary Dean (Cindy) Stewart; eight grandchildren - Danielle (Greg) and Drew (Ally) Messerschmidt, Kelsey (Brandon) Harris, Alex (Kelsy) and Landon Peterson, Jordan (Lena), Riley, and Sidney Stewart; two great grandchildren – Sawyer and Lawson Harris; and two siblings – Bonnie (Mike) Prosser, and Joann Kleinberg.

Gary was preceded in death by his first wife Rita, parents Caryl and Auley Stewart, brothers Caryl and Jimmie Stewart, niece Kerri Hartman, and nephew Justin Stewart.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 4th at Memorial Lutheran Church at 5000 S Western Ave in Sioux Falls at 1:00 pm with a livestream available. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Masks required and social distancing guidelines recommended.

A celebration of Gary’s life, including military honors, will be scheduled at a later date.
