Beatrice L. Smallfield
(November 2, 1915 - September 2, 2013)
Beatrice Smallfield, age 97, died Monday, September 2, 2013 at Edgewood Vista in Flandreau. Beatrice was born November 3, 1915 at Wall, SD to Albert and Olga (Pien) Winkowitsch. She was educated at Wall and then moved to a farm north of White, SD with her grandparents. Beatrice married Otto Smallfield on September 10, 1934 in Rapid City, SD and they farmed in Spring Creek Township north of Flandreau, SD. They retired from farming in 1961 and moved into Flandreau. She was an excellent seamstress and hand quilter making well over a hundred quilts, mostly for family members. Beatrice also worked as a cook in the Flandreau School System for a number of years. Otto preceded her in death on June 10, 1986. Beatrice became a resident of Edgewood Vista Assisted living in 2003. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, WELCA, North Get Together Club and the Flandreau American Cancer Society.
Beatrice is survived by 2 sons, John, Elkton, Delbert (Florence) Bloomington, MN, 6 daughters, Virgene Bullis, Luverne, MN, Helen McDaniel, Holten, KS, Frances Smallfield, Palm Desert, CA, Karen (Raymond) Johnson, Hephzibah, GA, Beverly (Jimmy) Jones, Egan/Wentworth, Dorothy Leraas, Brookings, 18 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and 1 brother, Orlin (Lourine) Winkowitsch, Rapid City. She was preceded in death by her husband Otto, 1 brother Melvin, 1 sister Iona, and 3 sons-in-law, Robert Swenson, Ernest Bullis and JD McDaniel.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Flandreau with burial in Union Cemetery Flandreau. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
