Beverly Petersen
May 5, 1929 - May 16, 2022
Beverly Petersen, 93, died Monday, May 16, 2022, at Dougherty Hospice House.
Bev was born May 5, 1929, in Minneapolis to Alvin and Clara Jensen. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1947 before attending Gustavus Adolphus College and graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1951 with a degree in elementary education.
Bev married A. Richard Petersen on June 13, 1952, in Minneapolis. They soon moved to Brookings, South Dakota, where her husband began a career in the ministry that eventually led to the nickname of “Pastor Pete” at Augustana University, where he and Bev were active in the academic, social and sports communities until his retirement in 1990. While in Sioux Falls, Bev raised four children and worked for 20-plus years at the YWCA as a preschool teacher and desk supervisor.
Bev and Pete made good use of their free time to travel as often as possible. They visited nearly all of the country’s Major League Baseball stadiums and state Capitols, and they made two trips to Denmark, where Bev got fresh perspectives for the family history books that she deeply treasured. Northern Minnesota also was a popular spot for milestone wedding anniversaries. Bev so looked forward to these gatherings because she knew her family would be together.
Bev's selfless demeanor and acts of kindness were second nature, and every day was an opportunity to positively impact those around her. It was easy for her to put the needs of others first, because that’s who she was, and she never wavered from that sentiment until she took her final breath. Her acts of generosity, affection and tenderness will be dearly missed.
Grateful for sharing Bev’s life are her four children, Wendy Hasche, Sara, Alan and Wayne (Kelly); five grandchildren, Bret Hasche, Ben Hasche (Elise), Megan Tvedt (Eric), Corey Petersen and Jeff Petersen; a great-grandson, Jens Tvedt; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; sister, Geraldine Weinreis; son-in-law, Bruce Hasche; and an infant grandson, Samuel Petersen.
Visitation will take place Monday, May 23, at Heritage Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will take place at Our Saviors Lutheran Church on Tuesday, May 24, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the A. Richard “Pastor Pete” and Beverly Petersen scholarship foundation fund at Augustana University or the Our Saviors Lutheran Foundation.
Virtual participation to watch Bev's funeral service will be available on Zoom.
