Death Summons Highly Esteemed Citizen March 20

K.O. Boyum Passes At The Age of Seventy-Four Year; Funeral Was Held Tuesday

Karl Johan Boyum was born in Logan Township, Minnehaha County, S.D. July 8, 1878, parents Nels O. and Ragnahilda Barsess Boyum. He was baptized and confirmed in the Rosendahl Lutheran Church located north of Sherman, S.D. by Rev. Helge Aansetad. In this area he grew to manhood.

May 15, 1901, he was united in marriage to Julia Josephine Thompson. To this union was born seven children. Two of them died in infancy and a son, Cecil Robert also died at the age of 15 years.

They lived on the farm until 1917 when they moved to Dell Rapids where they lived for 9 years and then moved to Sioux Falls. In 1929 they moved back to the farm which has been the family home ever since.

Mr. Boyum took sick over two weeks ago and Friday afternoon, March 20, passed away at the age of 74 years, 8 months and 12 days.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Norwald Boyum of Sioux Falls, and Walter Boyum at home; also two daughters, Hazel Boyum and Mrs. Ruth Thompson, both living on the Boyum farm near Dell Rapids. Fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren also survive. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. March Flugun of Thompson, Iowa, a brother Edward Boyum of Minneapolis, Minn. On brother, Arthur Boyum preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 24 from the home at 1:15 p.m. and from the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m. The pastor Rev. Ole M. Odland, officiating. Burial was made in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Mrs. Ole M. Odland served as organist and Ellsworth Brown. Pallbearers were John Thompson, Obert Oien, Grant Larson, Stephen Gilseth, John Fiersdahl and Gordon Thompson. Honorary pallbearers were Ole Landstad, Joe Gebhart, Martin Lerdal, Ed Arntson, Tony Heinemann and E.B. Kringen. The Hermanson Funeral service has charge of arrangements.

Relatives from away attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Boyum, Minneapolis; Mrs. Martha Flugum, Thompson, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Linderholt and Mrs. Edwin Jacobson, Thompson, Ia; Mr. and Mrs. James Boyum and two son of Sioux City, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Rentschler, Canton; Walter Rentschler, Larchwood; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Boyum and three children of Aberdeen.

The deceased has been one of the substantial citizens of this community his entire lifetime, blessed with all the qualifications of a splendid father, friend and neighbor and has a host of friends who mourn with the family in his passing.
