Arlene E. Fossum, age 81, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011 at the Sioux Falls Good Samaritan Center, due to pancreatic cancer. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at Lands Lutheran Church of rural Hudson, SD. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Arlene Evangeline (Tuntland) Fossum was born Jul. 18, 1929 in Lincoln County, South Dakota to Elmer and Opal R. (Steensland) Tuntland. She attended Pleasant Ridge Rural School and Canton High School, graduating in 1947. She was Home Coming Queen her senior years. She then attended Sioux Valley School of Nursing in Sioux Falls. Arlene married Richard "Dick" Fossum, her husband of 60 years, Dec. 16, 1950. They lived south of Canton, where she actively farmed with her husband and son. She enjoyed raising and selling flowers from her gladiola, tulip, and lily farm, Arlene's Garden. She was also employed at several hospitals and at Canton Good Samaritan Center. Arlene was a member of Moe Parish and actively involved at Romsdal Lutheran Church. She specially enjoyed singing with the church choir. Proud of her Norwegian hertiage and was a member of Sons of Norway for many years. She enjoyed gardening and arranging flowers for friends and her church. She loved entertaining family and friends and traveling with her husband. They were in a pinochle club for many years. Arlene lover her pets and enjoyed collecting antiques. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband's parents, Oscar and Gina Fossum. Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Gregg Fossum, Beresford, SD; daughter Gail Fossum-Shea (Craig), Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Betty Boldt (Burleigh), Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law, Evelyn Fossum, Canton, SD; and an extended family of cousins, nieces and many friends that she considered as family.
