Long Illness
Claims Mrs. U.S. Earls
Mrs. U.S. Earls, 79, long-time resident of Dell Raids, died Friday in the Dell Rapids Community Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday in the Methodist church with the Rev. Orland Sloat officiating. Burial took place in the Dell Rapids cemetery with Hermanson's in charge. Pallbearers were: Harvey Pederson, Alvin A. Anderson, Neil Jensen, Milton Merry, Henry Bokker and Webster Drummond Jr., while Claus Bokker and Andrew Burkhart were ushers. Mrs. Robert Waagmeester was at the organ.
Fay Elliott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Elliott, was born October 13, 1886 in Dell Raids. She was graduate from high school here and was a graduate of Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan.
She was city librarian in Dell Rapids for 15 years and served on the Library Board for over 20 years, retiring last year. She was married to U.S. Earls on June 8, 1940 in Dell Rapids. Mr. Earls who had been superintendent of schools here for 28 years, died in 1956.
Mrs. Earls was a charter member of Chapter AD, P.E.O. an honorary member of the Dell Rapids Woman's Club and a member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service in the Methodist church. She promoted the Goodwill Industries in Dell Rapids for many years and was the local secretary for that organization.
Survivors are a brother Edgar Elliott of Spokane, Wash.; a sister Miss Charlotte Elliott of Portola Valley, Calif.; a step son Dr. Lester Earls of Ames, Iowa and a step daughter Mrs. Harold Nelson of Colman.
