Christine (Goeman) Smidt was born on a farm near Davis, SD on April 16, 1907, the daughter of Harm and Reaka (Schneiderman) Goeman. She attended rural school and grew up near Davis. On Dec. 29, 1921 she was united in marriage to Alfred J. Smidt. Following their marriage they farmed south of Lennox and then in the Worthing area. They retired and moved to Sioux Falls in 1980. Her husband died Jan. 4, 1982. Christine moved to Lennox in 1986 where she continued to live. She became a resident of the Lennox Good Samaritan Center in January of 1998 and later became a resident of Bethany Lutheran Home in Sioux Falls. Christine was a member of Second Reformed Church in Lennox. She also belonged to the Worthing Lodge (Sisters of Odd Fellows). She was an accomplished seamstress and cook, was very creative in decorating her home, using wallpaper. She enjoyed playing cards and playing the piano by ear. Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, John Smidt in 1952; one infant daughter in 1936; two grandsons: Clayton Smidt and Rick Molstad; two sons-in-law: Roger Molstad and Dale Johnson; one daughter-in-law: Vivian Albers; four brothers: Everett, Herman, Dick, and Bert Goeman; three sisters: Katie Slomski, Abbie Wendt and Hattie Reiners. She was the last surviving member of the Harm and Reaka Goeman family. Grateful for having shared her life are one son, Herman Smidt and his wife, Barbara, of Sioux Falls; two daughters: Gladys Johnson and Joyce Molstad, both of Sioux Falls; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; a special friend, Barbara Butenschoen of Hartford; plus several nieces and nephews.
