Walter G. Appel, son of Simon P. and Bertha F. (Ecker) Appel, was born April 9, 1919 at Ironton, MN. At the age of 4, the family moved to Redfield, SD, where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Redfield High School and in October 1940, enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. During his enlistment, he served in Radio and Aviation Electronics during WWII and the Korean War. Walter retired in October 1963, with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. On June 2, 1943, Walter was united in marriage with Lois Dickens At the Army Air Base in Sioux Falls, SD. After his retirement, the family moved to a farm outside of Tea, SD, where he worked as a farmer and also as building superintendent at 100 N. Phillips in Sioux Falls. He retired after 17 years of service. Walter was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a life member of the VFW. His hobbies included raising bees, electronics, Ham radio, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lois, Sioux Falls; one daughter, Kay Meyer and her husband, Thomas, Ames, IA; three sons, Stephen Appel and his wife, Phyllis, Lennox, SD, David Appel and his wife, Cheryled, Lennox, SD, Michael Appel, Waterloo, WI; eight grandchildren, Justin Appel, Stephanie Wallenstein, Susan Appel, Anne Appel, Paige Appel, Cherith Appel, Christopher Meyer, Robin Meyer; one brother, Roger Appel, Redfield, SD; four sisters, Nellie Lutter, Lucille Brindley, Maxine Stenper, all of Redfield, SD, Bernice Walz, Reno, NV; and a host of other relatives and friends. Walter was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Ann Appel; his parents; one brother, Edward Appel; and three sisters, Doris Karren, Margaret Haider, Marion Thiel.
