Otto Thorsheim was born in 1889 to George and Inga Thorsheim, who were emigrants from Norway. They farmed near Arlington, S.D. Otto had two brothers, Nels and Emmet. Emmet died at one year of age. Their father, George died in 1889 at age 34. The mother and sons, Nels and Otto, then returned to Norway. Inga went to work in Bergen and the sons went to live with their grandmother. Otto attended school there, and when he was 19 years old he came back to America to the state of South Dakota. He homesteaded in Harding County in 1908. In 1914, he married Thora Ensrud. They farmed in Lincoln County until their retirement. Thora was born in Hadeland, Norway, in 1889. When she was about seven years old, she came to America with her parents and one brother, Aksel. Thora and Otto had five children: Gladys, born in 1914, married Leslie Gubbrud. They have four children, Jean, Dennis, Steven, and Dean. Leslie, died in 1971. Gladys, now retired, taught school for over 26 years. Thelma, born in 1916, married Kenneth Lien. They have two children, Virgene and Janet. Kenneth is a farmer. Ethel, 1918, married Lowell Alness. They have two children, Laurie and Lon. They farm the Alness homestead. Ethel, retired, taught 25 years. Frances, 1924, married Dr. Lyman Low. They have three children, Terry, Tammy, and Gregg. Lyman died in 1980. Frances, a retired nurse, lives in Danville, Calif. Lowell, 1935, married Ruth Sunderman. They have no children and live near Sioux Falls.
