1864 - 1915
Marius was born in North Odal, Norway, in 1856. He came to America when he ws 26 years old, stopping first in Minnesota where his folks were living. He then decided to go to Dakota Territory, around Hudson. Thea Thorstenson came from North Odal, Norway, in 1884 and was married to Marius Nelson at Hudson. Marius built a small house and they farmed around Hud¬son until 1893 when they purchased a farm eight miles south and eight miles west of Canton. This farm was all prairie ex¬cept for five acres that had been plowed. There were no fences or buildings on the farm at this time. They loaded their small house on two wagons; so it would be ready for moving in the morning. The next morning they moved it to their new farm. Here they farmed and built the necessary buildings. Marius and Thea raised eight children: Nels, Theodore, Alma, Adolph, Henry, Tillman, Edwin, and Martha. In 1915 Thea passed away. In 1918 Edwin and Henry passed away. Marius, their father, passed away 17 days later with the flu. (Source: The Histroy of Lincoln County, SD 1985, page 578)
