1881 - 1955
Marie Alness, second daughter of Iver and Berit Alness, was born in 1881. When a young woman she went to North Dakota to file a claim on a homestead in Hettinger County. She married Ingvald Alness from Romsdal, Norway in 1908. He came to Lincoln County, worked as a hired hand, and then filed a claim in Hettinger County, also. They lived in a little wood shanty on their half section of land (two homesteads). Their four children were born there: lone, Charlotte, Camele, and Lowell. After 15 years they returned to Lincoln Coun¬ty. Berit Alness had been a widow for many years and wanted them to take over the Alness homestead. Tliey cared for her until her death at age 92. Marie Alness died in 1955. Ingvald Alness died in 1960. (Source: The History of Lincoln Co, SD 1985, page 249-250)
