Oluf O. Lyng Was Highly Esteemed Resident of This Community For Many Years

Oluf O. Lyng passed away at his home June 20 at the age 91 years, 6 months and 1 day. He was born December 19, 1859 in Veral, Norway. He parents were Annemaria and Anneius O. Lyng. He was baptized and confirmed in Norway. As a young man he had training as a cabinet maker and builder. At the age of 21 he left Norway and came to the Dell Rapids community, the only member of his family to come to the United States. He continued his trade until he started farming. He retired and moved to Dell Rapids in 1923. He made two visits to Norway, the last time in 1911 with his wife.

He was united in marriage to Grethe Thompson of November 4, 1882, at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Gunder Thompson by Rev. E.H. Mitbo. They had about 57 years of married life when his wife died Oct. 18, 1939. To this union ten children were born. Marenanna and Ella died in infancy, Oscar in 1921 and Gina in 1933. He is survived by three sons: Fred of Sioux Falls, Felix and Alvin, Dell Rapids. Three daughters, Mrs. Alma Overvaag, Dell Rapids, Mrs. I.E. Locke (Elsie) of Flandreau and Mary at home; one son-in-law, four daughters-in-law including Mrs. Agnes Lyng of Britton, 17 grandchildren and 2 nieces and 3 nephews in Norway who will cherish his memory.

Mr. Lyng was a life member of the Lutheran Church and was interested in its activities. In years past he was active in his church, often as an officer. He was also of service in his community, serving on boards in the country, the local bank and lumber company. He had been confined to his home for many years and had been bed-ridden over four years. He was very patient in his affliction and always looked forward to being called home.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the home and at the Lutheran Church with Rev. Ole M. Odland in charge, Mrs. Kenneth Lyng, a granddaughter sang "The Twenty-third Psalm" and "Den Store Hvide Flock" Accompanied by Miss Madeline Lerdal.

Honorary pallbearers were Christian Johnson, P.T. Pederson, Chris Paulson, Nelius Lyngaas, Ole Landstad and C.A. Golden. Active pallbearers were grandsons Loraine, Curtis, and Milton Overvaag, Robert Locke, Kenneth, Arlo and Gordon Lyng.

Burial took place in the Stordahl cemetery where he directed the building of the early church and latter the present chapel.

Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gunder Thompson. Grethe and Oluf married November 4, 1882 in her parents home.
