Gloria K. McDermott was born in Lennox, SD, on Sep. 28, 1928, the daughter of Peter H. and Eva K. (Fokken) Gayken. She attended Worthing Public Schools, graduating in 1946. She then lived in Sioux Falls and Sioux City, IA. On May 8, 1949, she was united in marriage to Francis E. McDermott at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Worthing, SD. Following their marriage they lived in Kingsley, IA. until June of 1950 when they moved to Worthing. They had made their home there since that time. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Brenner Elevator for several years. Preceding her in death were her son, Peter McDermott, who died Oct. 5, 1974; her father, who died Oct. 25, 1953; and her mother, who died Sep. 7, 1983. Following a lengthy illness, Gloria died at the McKennan Hospice Unit in Sioux Falls on Wed. Jun. 14, 1995. She attained the age of 66 years, eight months and 16 days. Grateful for having shared her life are her widower, Francis E. (Smiley) McDermott; five children: Perry McDermott of Worthing, Patrick McDermott and his wife, Lorna of Sioux Falls, Robert McDermott and his wife, Sharon of Canton, Robin McDermott of Sioux Falls, and Brian McDermott and his wife, Christy of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren, Jody and Brent McDermott, two step-grandchildren: Heather and Kylie Muller; one sister; Vivian Fossum and her husband, Carroll of Canton; plus other relatives and friends.
