Erwin Paul Devitt was born in Sioux Falls on Sept. 17, 1919. His adoptive parents were Paul and Adelila (Bushnell) Devitt. He grew up near Worthing on the family farm and attended St.Mary's Sisters School in Marion and then country and high school in Worthing. He served in the military for two and one-half years, stationed on Lady Island in the Pacific and then returned to the farm.
On May 24, 1947 he was married to Joyce Karli of Valley Springs in the chapel of St. Joseph's Cathedral. They farmed near Worthing the entire 53 years of their marriage. Erwin was a life-long member of Saint Edward's Catholic Church where he served as a Lector, Eucharistic minister and did janitor jobs. He was a 60 year member of William R. Bradshaw American Legion Post 9177 in Worthing and a life member of the Canton Veterans of Foreign Wars. Erwin's love was to farm and raise animals. Until his last hours of life he still talked about the price of corn and if his son-in-law, Steve was getting his cows. Mom and Dad raised five kids on their farm, to which they provided much good living and lots of wonderful memories. They both were very giving of themselves. Besides his parents and two infant siblings, Erwin was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, who died April 26, 2001 and several of her siblings and spouses. Gratefully sharing his life are his children: Lyle and his wife, June, of Worthing, Lowell and his wife, Mareene, of Brandon, Linda and her husband, Steve, of Marion, Lori Baldwin of Bloomington, MN and Loren of Minneapolis, MN; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchidren; and other relatives and friends
