James Shanley, born in Lowell, Mass., December 25, 1839. When 14 he moved to Washington County, Vermont. He enlisted, August 1862, in Company B 13th Vermont Infantry and was in the Battle of Gettysburg. He was sunstroke from which he never fully recovered and after 9 months was mustered out at Brattleboro, Vermont. He then worked for the state quarry in Northfork, Vt. He came to Lincoln County, South Dakota in 1870 and settled in section 7 of Canton Twsp. He started to break up his farm but the grasshoppers were so numerous and clean up the crops for a number of years, he went to work on the R. R. (assume railroad . . ebo). On December 26, 1861 he married Miss Mary J. Hasset of Washington Co., VT She was born in this county September 17,1841. Their six children are, John A., Nellie J., Mary J., wife of Timothy Reiley of Lennox, Daniel H. who married Sadie Ralston Nov. 26, 1896, Eliza N. and Fannie who died when 10 years old.
