Death Summons
Mrs. Olive Harvey
Olive D. Merry was born at Waupaca, Wisconsin, September 30, 1857. She lived there and at Fennemore, Wisconsin, until the family moved to Dell Rapids when she was 16 years old. The family homestead on what is now the Lyman Merry farm and she has spent the remainder of her life in this vicinity, except for two years in Western South Dakota.
Miss Merry was married to J.T. Harvey in November, 1879. They homesteaded on the farm now occupied by Roe Merry, living there for three years. They then moved to Dell Rapids, where Mr. Harvey ran a livery business for some years. They spent two years in Miner County, Western South Dakota, but returned again to Dell Rapids. Mr. Harvey then engaged in several businesses as long as his health permitted.
Mrs. Harvey joined the Baptist Church while the family was still in Wisconsin, but it was that same year, 1873, that the family moved to Dell Rapids. When they came to Dell Rapids they brought their church letters with them and soon Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Merry and Olive were received into the local Baptist Church. They were the first Baptist to unite with the church following its organization in 1872 was 16 charter members.
Mrs. Harvey has therefore been a member of this church for nearly 70 years, a record that no one else has nearly equaled. It may be that no other Baptist in South Dakota has equaled this record either.
Mrs. Harvey has been in comparatively good health all of her life until her declining years. On November 11, 1941, she fell and broke her hip and has been bedridden since. During that year and a half she has been cared for in the local hospital, in her own home by her sister, Miss Margaret Merry, and in a nursing home in Sioux Falls. She died in Sioux Valley hospital Sunday morning, April 11.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1924, and her adopted son, Ross, who died in 1916 at 22 years of age.
Two sisters, Mrs. J.J. Jackson and Miss Margaret Merry, are the only ones of her family left, though there is a large group of other relatives surviving.
