Dagny Goodale, 86, Who had “old-world polish,” dies

Dell Rapids – Dagny Goodale’s quiet elegance brought a touch of the old country to the Midwest. She shared her ready smile and genuine warmth with nearly everyone.

“She was very down-to-earth, but she had an elegant aura to her,” said her son, Lauren Goodale, of Falling Water, W.Va. “She brought her old world polish and manners with her from Norway. She was an elegant lady, but led an unsophisticated life.”

Dagny “Peanuts” Goodale, 86, died from complications of pneumonia on Monday, Feb 14, 2000, at the Dell Rapids Community Hospital.

Dagny Sagmoe was born Nov. 30, 1913, on a farm near Baltic. She grew up in the Baltic-Renner area and attended schools in the area.

She attended West Nidaros Lutheran Church as a child and was enthusiastic in her Sunday school participation. “She received a pin for eight years of perfect attendance of Sunday School,’ said her daughter, Darlene Lodmell, of Dell Rapids. “She was very proud of that pin.”

She was a tomboy growing up and spent a majority of her time with her father. “He would kind of spoil her,” Lodmell said, “When he went into town, he’d always bring her back a bag of peanuts. Eventually it became her nickname and it’s stuck around ever since.”

She married Hollis Goodale in 1932 in Dell Rapids. The couple lived in Dell Rapids until 1943, when they moved to a farm near Chester. They later lived on a farm near Baltic, and in Ashton, Iowa. Following her husband’s death in 1969, Dagny Goodale returned to Dell Rapids.

Goodale was a talented homemaker and mother. “She was always very supportive of my father,” her son said. “She took an active role in my schooling and my scouting.”

She often too her children on the short walk to the Big Sioux River to catch bullheads, “Boy, could she fry them up,” her daughter said. “She was a great cook. She made wonderful homemade bread and rolls.”

While she had no formal musical training, Goodale loved to entertain the family on the piano and accordion. “She’d never had a lesson, but show could really make it rock.” Lodmell said. “And our dad would get on the mouthorgan and they would play as a little band.

Goodale loved to host get-togethers at her home, and often cooked huge meals for the Sunday afternoon gathering. She also enjoyed visiting her daughter, Dorothy Butcher, in Superior, Ariz., “She would go out rock hunting.” Lodmell said. She also liked to ride the four wheeler.”

She worked for many years at the Odd Fellows Nursing Home in Dell Rapids, “She would walk the mile to work, every day, summer and winter, regardless of weather,” Lodmell said. “She was good at her job. She was a very smiley person and took good care of the residents.”

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids and the Altar Society.

In addition to her son and daughters, surviors include 21 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; and three sisters; Orvidia Brende of Dell Rapids; Marie Chadwick of Sioux Falls; and Ethel Dybvig of Baltic.

Services begin at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be the church cemetery.

Visitation begins at noon today at the Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids, with a wake service at 7 p.m.in the funeral home chapel.
