Privacy Policy

At the South Dakota Gravestone Photo Project, the privacy of our visitors is of extreme importance to us. This privacy policy document outlines the types of personal information is received and collected by our website and how it is used.

1. Information We Collect

Personal Information: We only collect personal information (such as your name and email address) when you voluntarily submit it to us via our contact forms or when submitting photos and records. This information is used strictly to respond to your inquiries, provide support, or manage your submissions.

Non-Personal Information: Like many other websites, we utilize log files and analytics tools (such as Google Analytics). The information inside the log files includes internet protocol (IP) addresses, type of browser, Internet Service Provider (ISP), date/time stamp, referring/exit pages, and number of clicks. This information is used to analyze trends, administer the site, track user's movement around the site, and gather demographic information. IP addresses and other such information are not linked to any information that is personally identifiable.

2. User-Uploaded Content & Photo Submissions

Because our project relies on community contributions, users may upload historical data, transcriptions, and photographs of gravestones. The historical data (names, birth/death dates) and images of gravestones are considered public historical records.

By submitting images and data, you grant the South Dakota Gravestone Photo Project the right to host and display those materials in perpetuity as a free public archive, as outlined in our Terms of Use. The contact information you provide during submission is retained internally to manage the archive and is not published publicly.

3. How We Use Your Information

We are a free resource dedicated to the genealogy community. We do not and will never sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. Your email address is strictly used for communication directly related to your inquiries or submissions.

4. Cookies and Third-Party Advertising

We use cookies to store information about visitors' preferences, record user-specific information on which pages the user access or visit, and customize web page content based on visitors browser type or other information that the visitor sends via their browser.

Google AdSense: We use third-party advertising companies, including Google, to serve ads when you visit our website. These companies may use information (not including your name, address, email address, or telephone number) about your visits to this and other websites in order to provide advertisements about goods and services of interest to you.

  • Google, as a third party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to our users based on their visit to our sites and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • Users may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings.
5. Data Security

We implement a variety of security measures to maintain the safety of your personal information when you enter, submit, or access your personal information. However, no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
