Richard Otto Wold
October 15, 1934 - January 26, 2021
Richard Otto Wold passed away January 26, 2021 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, surrounded by his loving family.
The family will have a private family service streamed at 2 pm on Saturday at https://youtu.be/-njv7BeLJzg, with a celebration of Dick’s life to be held at a later date. We are grateful for the loving care Dick received at Dougherty Hospice House. Memorials are suggested to First Lutheran Church of Sioux Falls, Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls or the charity of your choice.
Dick was born October 15, 1934 to Stella (Steineke) and Albert Wold at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls.
He attended Lincoln Grade School, Washington High School and is a graduate of the University of South Dakota. He was an exceptional basketball player and overall gifted athlete. He was inducted into the Washington High School Athletic Hall of Fame, received the USD Outstanding Athlete Award, and was USD School of Business Alumnus of the Year. He was a graduate of the School of Banking, Madison, Wisconsin.
Dick married Jeanne Rademacher on April 1, 1956 in Garretson, SD.
Dick began a career in banking with Northwestern National Bank (now Wells Fargo) in 1958. He championed and developed many civic activities, including the first Industrial Park in Sioux Falls, and was a director of the Sioux Empire and Sioux Falls Development foundation. In 1972, he became President and CEO of First National Bank in Grand Forks, ND (now Alerus Financial). He was instrumental in bringing Interstate banking to North Dakota in 1991 and served as chairman of the North Dakota Bankers Association in 1992-1993. He served on many additional boards and committees, receiving the Grand Forks Henry Havig Leadership Award in 1989.
Dick leaves behind a legacy of building up the communities and people around him. One of Dick’s great joys was mentoring young people in their careers. He helped many people achieve their goals, whether buying their first home or starting a business.
He was a towering man who loved life. His stories and humor were legendary and his timing was perfect. He was a voracious reader of American and Civil War history. He loved music, especially country music, and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren to golf, always emphasizing the importance of “the short game”.
Dick was a wonderful father to three daughters, raising them with the right mix of love and high standards. There are not enough words to describe our father.
It is said, “When a person dies, a book is burned.” In Dick’s case, a library burned.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Howard and sister, Ada Nelson.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, his daughters Sally Wold, Susan Kraft (Brian) and Sarah Mathis (Paul), seven grandchildren - Jana Larson (Nick), Steven Kraft (Callie), Michael Kraft (Lacey), Jack Mathis (Erika), Phil Smith (Leah), Eric Mathis and Lauren Kraft, seven great-grandchildren - Owen, Claire, Grace, Crew, Norah, Henry and Beau and two nieces - Linda Moon and Laurie Doherty.
