Kay Coddington
November 9, 1939 - July 1, 2022

Kay Rich Coddington passed away July 1, 2022, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 82. Kay liked to get straight to the point. She instructed her obituary to be "just the details you need to know," so here it goes.

Kay was born November 9, 1939, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Nyeulah Whitmore Rich and Lyle Merton Rich. Kay's family moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, and then to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Most recently, Kay lived in independent living at Dow Rummel.

After graduating from Washington High School in 1957, Kay received an Associate's Degree from William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri, and a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and History from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Kay was a partner of The Book Shop in Sioux Falls for 19 years and co-owner of family businesses Rich Brothers Company and Sioux Falls Fireworks. She was passionate about and dedicated countless hours to the Mary Chilton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Augustana Library Associates, Sioux Falls League of Women Voters, AAUW, and P.E.O.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents.

She will remain forever in the hearts of her daughter Alisa Coddington, son Michael (Amy Seidel), grandsons Ethan and Chase, brother Michael (Christine) Rich, niece Theresa Rich, and all of the Dolan clan from her former husband, Keel Coddington, as well as countless friends Kay made along the way – golf gals, investment club friends, her bridge group, and even some "Twister Sisters."

She did not pen the above details, but she did provide this closing: Kay loved her friends and family. She loved to travel, books and gardens. So, travel to a favorite garden, read a book under a tree, drink a glass of wine and be thankful for a wonderful life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Planned Parenthood North Central States and the Mikkelsen Library Endowment at Augustana University are preferable.

* A celebration of Kay’s wonderful life will be held Saturday, August 27th, at the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum at 10:30 am. All are welcome.

Please see additional notes on giving to Mikkelsen Library:
