Crystal “Chris” Janell Fedders
April 28, 1942 – December 12, 2022

Crystal “Chris” Janell Fedders, 80, peacefully passed away on December 12, 2022, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the Sanford Hospice Foundation Cottage. Chris was born on April 28, 1942 to John and Sadie (Heitmeyer) Van Aalsburg in Sheldon, Iowa. She grew up on a farm with five sisters just outside of Sheldon. She attended country school until 8th grade and then graduated from Sheldon High School. Chris was involved in 4-H club and church youth group.

Chris was united in marriage to the love of her life, Kenneth “Ken” John Fedders on July 13, 1962 in Sheldon, IA. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1962 and Chris began working as a teller at First National Bank while Ken began his teaching and coaching career at Whittier Junior High. Chris was a part of the First National Bank family for 40 years, before retiring from her position as a personal banking officer in 2002. As they raised their daughter and son, they became highly involved in the Sioux Falls community through school and sporting events. They were founding members of Community Reformed Church where Chris taught Sunday School and was a member of a Women’s Church Circle. Chris was steadfast in her faith and wanted to share it with others.

Chris enjoyed being active and participated in biking, walking, camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, reading, baking, and volunteering at the Washington Pavilion. After she retired, Chris traveled with Ken to Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and many countries in Europe. She also traveled throughout a majority of the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii. She so enjoyed memorable summer vacations with her husband, children, and grandchildren including the celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary at Lake Okoboji this past summer. Her greatest pride and joy was her role of grandma, or “Gram”, as she helped raise her two granddaughters from an early age. Chris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, daughter, friend, banker, helper, and believer.

Those grateful and blessed to have shared Chris’s life are her husband, Ken Fedders; her children, Julie Fedders of Sioux Falls, SD and Kurt Fedders of Gulf Shores, AL; her granddaughters, Talya (Rhett) Booher of Watertown, SD and Taysia Aasen of Sioux Falls, SD; her sisters, Ginny (Byron) Hokenson, Faith (Larry) Parmer, and Rosie Turner; her brothers-in-law, Roger Kimmel and Rich (Mary) Fedders; her sister-in-law, Glenda Brislawn; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Sadie Van Aalsburg; her sisters, Darlene Kimmel and Gloria Koerselman; her parents-in-law, Dick and Gertrude Fedders; her brothers-in-law, Roger Kimmel and Norman Fedders; and her nephew, Jim Kimmel.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at Community Reformed Church, 6800 E. 41st Street in Sioux Falls, SD. Chris’s family will be present to greet friends from 5:00-7:00 pm on Monday, December 19, 2022 at Miller Funeral Home - Downtown Chapel at 507 S. Main Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Reformed Church Youth Groups or the Washington Pavilion Youth Programs in Chris’s honor.
