Mary Ann Palmquist age 74 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away Wednesday August 3, 2022. Family will greet friends from 3:00-5:00 PM Sunday, August 7, 2022 at Miller Southside Funeral Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Ave. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM Monday at Miller’s Southside Chapel, with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to “Christian Broadcast Network (CBN), Operation Blessings” at 977 Centerville Turnpike, Virginia Beach, VA, 23465

Mary Ann Van Marel, daughter of Arie and Anna (Cleveringa) Van Marel, was born February 18, 1948 in Luverne, MN. She grew up in Steen, MN, and graduated from Hills Beaver Creek.

She was joined in marriage to William “Bill” Kollis in 1966 and the couple lived in Rock Valley, IA. This marriage resulted in the births of four children, Lisa, Renee, Steven, and Shannon. In addition to being a homemaker and mother to her own children and foster children; she worked at the CRC church and ran a dog grooming business out of their home. The family enjoyed Saturday night swimming at the Sioux Center pool and playing games to get their Christmas presents. The family later moved to Sioux Falls in 1979, where Mary Ann worked as a secretary at Augustana Lutheran Church and at CitiBank. Mary Ann then attended Carrie’s Cadesh in Mitchell for massage therapy and started Body & Soul in 1986.

She was later united in marriage to Donald Eugene Palmquist on April 18, 1997 and changed the name of their business to The Nerve Solution, where they operated the massage therapy business together. Don and Mary Ann enjoyed breakfasts out together, going for drives, and steak dinners at the “Feather’s Nest” in Ward, SD. Don and Mary Ann were also very good at interior design, remodeling many homes. They especially enjoyed doing these “flips” in Phoenix, Arizona where they wintered for the past several years.

Mary Ann enjoyed sewing, especially making clothes for her children and even their Barbie clothes. In addition, gardening, team softball, bowling leagues and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s functions. She also loved traveling, going to Hawaii, England, and Alaska.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Donald Palmquist: her children, Lisa (Jason) Kollis-Young, and Renee (David) Eliason, all of Sioux Falls,, SD; her step-children, , Marsha (Rick) Puskar, Arizona, Mark (Deb) Palmquist, Canova, SD, and melissa (Gary) Fiske, Sioux falls, SD; 6 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 15 step-great-grandchildren; her siblings, Evelyn (Gerhart) Van Dam, Edgerton, MN; Arnold Van Marel, Beaver Creek, MN; Rose (Arvin) Bleyenberg, Jennings, MI; Luretta Van Otterloo, Doon, IA; sister in-law, Clarella Van Marel, Boyden, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Her parents, Arie and Anna Van Marel; daughter Shannon, son Steven; sister Darlene Bolt and brother Alvin Van Marel, preceded her in death.
