October 19, 1958 - May 9, 2022
Mark Otten, 63, of rural Garretson, South Dakota passed away on Monday, May 9, 2022, at the Dougherty Hospice House surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation with family present to greet friends will be from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2022, at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2022, at Brandon Lutheran Church in Brandon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Avera at Home Hospice or the Avera Dougherty Hospice House.
Mark Otten, son of John and Rhoda (Anderson) Otten was born October 19, 1958, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He graduated from Washington High School in 1977. Mark married the love of his life, Suwa Hennings, on September 5, 1987. In their 34 years of marriage, they raised two children, Kaylee and Tyler.
In 1987 Mark started at Tiger Corporation as an engineering technician. He dedicated over 30 years to a career he loved.
In his younger years, he enjoyed bow hunting with his dad and riding motorcycles. He taught Suwa how to ride and they enjoyed many local poker runs, trips across the country, and attending the Sturgis Bike Rally, annually. His love of the outdoors did not fade over time, many great memories were made camping with family. Mark was a long-time fan of the Green Bay Packers and enjoyed talking football. Mark had a special gift of craftsmanship. He built their home in Crooks, assisted in many home improvement projects for family and friends, and created custom projects for anyone who asked.
Above all he loved his family, especially his grandchildren who affectionately called him “Papa Mark”.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Suwa Otten of Garretson; son, Tyler Otten of Sioux Falls; daughter, Kaylee (Dennis) Amundson of Colton; grandchildren, Blaine, Miles, and Roen Amundson; brother, Duane Otten of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Pamela Hanneman of Sioux Falls; mother-in-law, Emiko Hennings of Sioux Falls; siblings-in-law, Sandra (Tracy) Kinder of Sioux Falls and John Hennings of Sioux Falls; faithful companions, Dozer and Rudy; and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rhoda Otten; niece, Jenna Hanneman; and father-in-law, Robert Hennings.
The family would especially like to thank all of the care provided to Mark by the Avera Home Hospice Team and those at the Dougherty Hospice House.
