Karin Hartje
July 9, 1953 - September 10, 2021
Karin Hartje of Sioux Falls, died from natural cause on September 10, 2021, at home. She was 68.
Karin was born in Drayton, ND, on July 9, 1953 to Helmut and Ruth (Garn) Werner. She spent her early childhood on the family farm outside of Bathgate, ND. Karin moved to Sioux Falls in 1965, and attended Lincoln High School, graduating in 1971. She married Gary Hartje on September 14, 1974. Together they had 3 children. In 1985 they moved to Grand Forks, ND, where she started working in school food service. She continued her career in food service when they moved back to Sioux Falls in 1993. She became the general kitchen manager for Washington High, and retired after 25 years in 2019. Karin enjoyed gardening, golfing, cooking, sailing with friends, cheering on the Minnesota Vikings, and spending time with her 14 grandchildren. She loved late night phone calls with her sisters and mom.
Karin is survived by her husband, Gary, of 47 years; her children, Jodi (Tom) Reel of Sioux Falls, Kelly (Josh) Grossman of Byron, MN, James (Lauren) Hartje of Monrovia, MD, and honorary son, David (Holly) Hayes of Anchorage, AK; mother, Ruth Werner of Sioux Falls; and sisters, Edith (Richard) Bonnett of Calgary, AB, Barbara (Dick) Funke of Rowena, SD, and “sister” aunt, Ellen (David) Weber of Williams Bay, WI; and 14 grandchildren, Jack, Harmony, Heidi, Grace, William, Jonathan, Matthew, Claire, Aubrey, Nathan, Mark, Haakon, Mazzie Odette, and Graham, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Karin is preceded in death by her grandparents and her father, Helmut Werner.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00am Friday, September 17, 2021 at Miller Westside Chapel, 6200 W. 41st St., Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will be one-hour prior to the service, with a light lunch to follow.
Interment will be at a later date.
