Lorraine Lilly Sapp
February 18, 1934 - June 23, 2021

Lorraine Lilly Johnson Sapp passed away quietly in her sleep at her home in San Antonio, Texas, on June 23, 2021. Lori was born in Alcester, South Dakota, on February 18, 1934 and seven years later moved with her family to Bridgewater, South Dakota, where she graduated as salutatorian from Bridgewater High School. She went on to attend Sioux Falls College and briefly taught fifth grade before marrying Charles W. Sapp in the summer of 1955. This began a partnership that only death could end. It took them through Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Southern California and ultimately to Texas, which was their adopted home for nearly forty years.

Throughout her life, Lori was focused on her ever-growing family, their broad array of friends and their local church and its activities. She was the arbiter of, and helpmate for, homework, piano lessons, sports and family activities. She also was an accomplished seamstress and kept the family well clothed in the early years. She made friends in every place she lived and maintained those friendships over a lifetime despite the geographical separation. Her inability to forget a birthday, holiday, graduation or other special event, and the resulting cards and letters that she sent, meaningfully impacted the nation’s gross national product, and also served as the glue that bound her extended family and massive friend network together. She was also a faithful servant of, and active participant in, her local church - for the past few decades, St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Boerne, Texas. The final theme in her life was her vast love of and knowledge about basketball, especially the hometown San Antonio Spurs. They too were her kids. All in all, she touched an astonishing number of people, and her passing leaves a hole in the lives of so many. Her impish sense of humor, her girlish giggle and, most of all, the knowledge that someone cared deeply about us cannot be replaced and leaves us all, especially those listed below, a bit poorer.

Lori is survived by her husband of 66 years (Charles W. Sapp), one sibling (Wilbur Johnson), her daughter (Dawn M. Simons), two of her three sons (Douglas W. Sapp and Darrell W. Sapp), her son-in-law (Laird H. Simons III), her three daughters-in-law (Dina Sapp, Kendall Sapp and Cynthia Sapp) and her five grandchildren (Courtney Sapp, Clayton Sapp, Lauren Sapp Bailey, Kendra Sapp and Ashley Simons). She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Bradley R. Sapp.

Lori's funeral service and reception will be held on July 10, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the George Boom Funeral Home, 3408 East 10th Street, Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57103. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, you consider making a donation to your favorite charity.

A memorial service will be held in San Antonio, Texas at a later date.
