Roger Gene Schneekloth

Sioux Falls - Roger Gene Schneekloth, age 90, of Sioux Falls, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2018 at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, MN. He was born near Steen, MN, on September 7, 1928 to Arnold and Mary (Slieter) Schneekloth.

Roger grew up on the family farm near Hills, MN and graduated from Hills High School, where he excelled on the basketball team. His home life instilled values of faith, care for family and hard work. He earned an early reputation for his leadership, industry, strength of character, and fun nature.

After high school, he joined the national guard in Luverne, MN and subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Army. A proud veteran, he served as a Master Sergeant from 1950-52. He was in the front lines of active combat during the Korean War from 1951-52.

On September 15, 1956, he was united in marriage to Janice Tatge in Sioux Falls, where they began their life together and later raised their two sons. Roger began his employment at the Sioux Falls Stockyards, where he, in 1969, along with two partners, established Siouxland Farmers Livestock Sales, Inc., a community leader in livestock brokerage over several decades. He was known as a strong leader, who cared personally for his employees and gratefully expressed appreciation throughout his life for his faithful farmer and rancher friends and customers. He was proud to have his son, Jeff, join him in the business which he led until the closure of the Sioux Falls Stockyards when he was 80.

Roger's community involvement included over 60 years of faithful membership at First Lutheran Church, where he served as a deacon and long-time usher. He was on the Advisory Board at First National Bank in Sioux Falls. He was a Mason, Shriner, and Jester, served a term as president of Minnehaha Country Club, and worked on the United Way fund drive. He will be remembered for his generosity and engagement in the Sioux Falls community.

His passions included the game of golf and playing cards with good friends. He avidly followed sports of all types, especially football, basketball and golf. He loved his sons and grandchildren and took great pride in their accomplishments. He also enjoyed South Dakota pheasant, duck and geese hunting, particularly during the later decades of his life. He traveled extensively, exploring new cultures and finding adventure with family and friends into his 80s. He and Jan spent over 25 years with friends and family in their winter home of Sun Lakes, AZ, until failing health prevented further travel.

Roger loved spending time with family and friends—he was a people person, who warmly engaged with everyone around him. He will be remembered for his quick smile, large warm hands and embrace, big laugh and generous heart. He will be dearly missed by many.

He is survived by Jan, his wife of 62 years, sons Jeffrey (Dr. Kathy) Schneekloth of Sioux Falls and Dr. Terry (Mary) Schneekloth of Rochester, MN; grandchildren Joseph Roger, Minneapolis, MN, Jensine, Oyster Bay, NY, Michael, Abby, and Andrew, Rochester, MN, Simone and August Roger, Sioux Falls; sisters Mary Lou (Milt) Eitreim, Bella Vista, AR, and Avis Amundson, Greenfield, IN; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert; and sisters Vivian Rollag and Verna Mae Larson.

Roger's family wishes to express deeply felt gratitude to the staff at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, MN, for their dedicated and loving care of him during his final years of life.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 12 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 13 at First Lutheran Church, 327 S. Dakota Avenue, Sioux Falls, with fellowship luncheon to follow before committal rites at Woodlawn Cemetery. Gifts and memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church. www.millerfh.com
