Dell Rapids – Mass of Christian Burial for Francis Schwebach will be celebrated on Monday, April 1, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation on Sunday, March 31, 2002, will be from 1 to 5 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home and will resume at 6 p.m. at St. Mary's Church. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday in the church. Francis J. Schwebach was born on September 27, 1920 in Dell Rapids, the son of Nick and Mary (Hilbert) Schwebach. He grew up in Dell Rapids and graduated from St. Mary High School in 1939. He worked for his father in the family plumbing, heating and electric business until 1942. In July of 1942, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in the European and Pacific Theaters. He was honorably discharged on December 25, 1945. He returned to Dell Rapids and on April 30, 1946, Francis was married to Mary Mergen at St. Mary Catholic Church. He entered the family business and in 1960, he opened F.J. Schwebach Plumbing and Heating in Dell Rapids. He retired from his business in 1981. Frances died on Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. He was 81 and was preceded in death by his parents, one infant granddaughter, one sister, and three brothers. Francis was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Dell Rapids American Legion Post, where he was active on the Firing Squad, the Lions Club, the Elks Club, and the American Society of Heating and Refrigeration Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He served on the Dell Rapids Hospital board for 12 years. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary of Dell Rapids; his two sons: Lynn and his wife, Linda of Greenville, SC, and Rand and his wife, Mignonne of Dell Rapids; his two daughters, Paula Crisp of Dell Rapids, and Patricia Deis and her husband Mark of Forest, VA; his 16 grandchildren; his brother, Jerome Schwebach of Dell Rapids, and his two sisters, Agnes Kelly and her husband, John, of Minneapolis, MN and Rita Walker and her husband, Vern of Flandreau.
