James Burbank, Jr., "Jim", age 82, longtime resident of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2022 at his home.
James was born on June 9, 1940 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to his parents, James Albert Burbank Sr. and Phyllis Jane (Cheney) Burbank. James grew up in Sioux Falls until the family moved to Anadarko, Oklahoma in the early 1950’s. James graduated from St. Gregory's Catholic High School in 1957 and continued his education at St. Gregory's Junior College, where he earned an Associate of Science degree in 1959. He went on to attend Saint John’s University in Minnesota where he received his Bachelor of Science and Arts diploma. He also studied at the University of Munich in Munich Germany from 1964 through 1966. James moved to southwest Oklahoma and on August 1, 1971 began teaching at Western Oklahoma State College in Altus as a Natural Science Instructor. He was an educator at Western Oklahoma State College for more than thirty years until his retirement on June 30, 2003. During his tenure he also served in various capacities such as Dean of Arts and Sciences and Division Director of Science, Math, PE, and Social Studies. Early in his tenure at WOSC, James also pursued post graduate studies at the School of Mines in Rapid City, South Dakota. James enjoyed being outside in nature, hiking and exploring. He will be forever missed by all his students and fellow educators for all of his hard work and dedication which greatly contributed to the proud image of Western Oklahoma State College.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James Albert Burbank Sr. and Phyllis Jane (Cheney) Burbank; brothers, Peter Burbank and Charles Burbank; his sister, Annette Burbank, and his longtime close companion Pauline Perry. James is survived by his brothers, David Burbank; Daniel Burbank and wife Kathy; Christopher Burbank and wife Mary; his sisters, Denise Burbank and Michelle Burbank; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and many fellow educators, students, and friends.
The family of James Burbank will have private funeral arrangements under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus, Oklahoma.
