Merrily Jane Petersen
May 4, 1953 - January 9, 2024
Merrily Petersen, 70, passed away at Dougherty Hospice on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.
Funeral services will be at Heritage Funeral Home on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. with fellowship to follow.
Merrily Jane Petersen was born on the 4th day of May in 1953 to Charles and Delilah (Petersen) Petersen at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota. Merrily was the oldest of their two children. Her brother, Scott, was born two years later.
She grew up in Yankton and graduated from high school in 1971. She attended South Dakota State University for one year, transferring to the Patricia Stevens School in Omaha the next. Merrily was married in 1974 but reclaimed her single woman status again in the early 1980’s. She did not have any children from that marriage.
After working in her parent’s real estate business in Yankton for several years, Merrily moved to Sioux Falls in the mid-1980’s and worked in the restaurant and healthcare industries in various capacities. After the family business moved to Sioux Falls, Merrily again worked for the company.
Merrily moved to Trail Ridge Assisted Living in 2010 and loved living there until her passing 14 years later. She greatly enjoyed her fellow residents, and the staff became like family to her. She was greatly appreciative of the care and caring she received at Trail Ridge.
Her cousins, upon hearing of her passing, remember her for her laughter, lovely disposition and, of course, her Jello! Her Trail Ridge “family” reminisces about how nice and appreciative she always was.
She will be greatly missed by her family – Scott and his wife, Maryanne; their three children, Scott, Meagan and Erica; and her many cousins on both sides of the Petersen families.
