It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Gregory Harmon, known fondly as Greg, on March 31, 2023. Greg's remarkable journey, filled with dedication, love, and a passion for meteorology, has left an indelible mark on the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by his loving family, cherished friends, and the communities he served.

Greg was born on December 7, 1950, and throughout his life, he embraced every moment with warmth, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to his craft. His love story with Michele Harmon, his devoted wife of 40 years, was a testament to their unwavering bond and shared adventures. Together, they created a loving home and a foundation of support for their two children, Jacey Harmon and Alyssa Carlson. Greg's greatest joy came from being a doting grandfather to his beloved grandchildren, Garrett Harmon and Isabel Carlson, whom he showered with endless love and cherished memories.

Greg's illustrious career as a meteorologist spanned over several decades, during which he served with dedication and distinction for the National Weather Service. He embarked on his professional journey in Sioux Falls, where his passion for understanding weather patterns and his remarkable ability to analyze complex data quickly became apparent. Greg's love for severe weather drew him back to Sioux Falls, where he wanted to be at the forefront of the intense storms that captivated his fascination. In 1991, he returned as the esteemed Meteorologist in Charge, embracing the opportunity to study and forecast the severe weather events that challenged and captivated him. Throughout his career, Greg's contributions were recognized and celebrated. He was awarded a prestigious silver medal by the National Weather Service for his pioneering work in developing the National Weather Portable Unit System. His innovative approach to weather monitoring revolutionized the field and earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.

Upon his retirement in 2011, Greg bid farewell to his professional career, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge and expertise that has undoubtedly impacted countless lives. His commitment to accuracy, his ability to communicate complex weather patterns in a relatable manner, and his genuine concern for the well-being of those he served made him a trusted figure in the communities he touched.

Beyond his professional achievements, Greg had a zest for life that was evident in his various pursuits. An avid golfer, he found solace and camaraderie on the golf course, often sharing memorable rounds with his friends and his son, Jacey. Greg's love for sports extended to Oregon teams, and he was a devoted fan who relished every victory and weathered every defeat with unwavering support.

Greg's thirst for knowledge and his inquisitive nature led him to explore various hobbies and interests. He had a passion for trading stocks, navigating the market with his astute insights. Greg's love for learning extended beyond his profession, as he enjoyed immersing himself in books and staying up to date with current affairs. In his leisure time, Greg delighted in spending precious moments with his family, cherishing the laughter and love that filled their home. He loved to bake with his grandson Garrett, sharing special moments and delicious treats. And with his granddaughter Isabel, he found joy in simple pleasures, like indulging in their favorite Oreo cookies. Greg's kindhearted nature and easygoing demeanor made him a beloved presence in the lives of his family and friends, and he will forever be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering love.

A celebration of Greg's life will be held at 11:00 am on July 10, 2023 at Miller Funeral Home – Southside Chapel (7400 S Minnesota Ave., Sioux Falls, SD).
